Waddecar 2004

February Camp

As expected, we’ve already had a couple of camps at Waddecar this year. The first in February, coincided with the fourth caving trip and we had a presentation in the evening when Jim from Lancashire Underground Group (Captain Bird’s Eye) awarded caving badges to the lucky few. It was during this camp that the leaders gave a demonstration on how not to warm your sleeping bag using a large stone from the fire – we had one sleeping bag burned and nearly a tent on fire!

May Camp

The second trip during May was a pioneering weekend where we built rope bridges, a ducking stool and other pioneering constructions, although some miserable ‘Jobsworth’ from District stopped us from building an aerial runway (commonly known as a ‘DeathSlide’) for no apparent reason. The ducking stool was great fun and we spent a great afternoon sorting out the ‘Rich Tea’s’ from the ‘Hobnobs’ – for those who don’t understand Peter Kay speak that’s 1-dip’s or 2-dip’s………and if you’re still not clear on that you’ll have to ask the Scouts or watch the Peter Kay at Bolton’s Albert Hall video.

We also learnt the essential ingredient for starting fires – the infamous ‘fire-starter’ or in plain English, a tampon – they’re light-weight, made of cotton wool and come wrapped in plastic to keep them dry. For next camp, all scouts will be expected to provide their own supply of ‘fire-starters’ so watch out Mum and Sisters.
